5 Tips To Avoid Getting Messy While Painting Your Branford, CT Living Room
New Haven Blogging • April 9, 2022

Painting our living rooms can either be therapeutic or a disaster. For starters, it does feel good to see your living room getting a fresh coat of paint, being rejuvenated, getting back that luster and shine it once had. But, painting your living room could easily turn into a disaster, especially if you have no idea what you are doing, leaving a trail of mess you'll just have a hard time cleaning after. So, if you're currently looking for the right tips and tricks on how to avoid getting messy while painting your living room, well, you're just in time. To help you paint mess-free, here are 5 Tips To Avoid Getting Messy While Painting Your Living Room in Branford, CT.

1. Know The Materials You'll Need To Buy

Doing a lot of prep work ahead of time is one of the most efficient strategies to avoid getting dirty and messy when painting. It's a good idea to know what painting products you'll need before you start painting your living room. This ensures that you have all of the materials you'll need to complete the project and eliminates any delays for your project, perhaps needing another trip to your local hardware store as you forgot to pick up some painting materials. Also, if you're working on a budget, you can be assured that you'll just buy what you need to complete the project, rather than wasting money on things you won't eventually use later on.

2. Proper Surface Preparation

One of the most common causes of paint problems is a lack of proper surface preparation - so to make sure that your painting project will run smooth and mess-free, do proper surface preparation before painting. In preparing your surface for painting, you will want to inspect your walls for any sign of damage or cracks and mend them accordingly. You'd also want to make sure that your walls are clean and free of any dirt and grime - to do this, just grab your old handy brush or rag, a disinfectant, and wipe your walls clean until they are gleaming and ready to be painted. Just make sure, though, that your walls are fully dry before you apply a coat of paint on them.

3. Remove All Obstacles

Our living rooms are bustling with so much furniture - cabinets, sofas, TV sets, and so much more - so to make sure that you won't be tripping over these and spilling paint all over your living room, remove all your furniture that could be obstacles in your painting process. This will be of great help for you to avoid mess in painting your living room as you make the room's space freer and more open, so you can freely move from one side to another as you're painting, without the worry of stumbling or tripping over something that might cause you to spill paint.

Additionally, you also need to make sure that you cover the ground nearest to where you're painting, so they can be protected from the inevitable paint spills and drips, and you won't need to spend extra time cleaning them up after you've painted.

4. Start Painting From The Top

To prevent getting nasty paint drips all over your fresh layer of paint, start painting from the top. Because paint drips are unavoidable, it's best to start at the top and work your way down, as this will effectively hide the paint drips that will eventually flow down your walls. Also, painting from the top first then making your way down will get you to work with gravity instead of against it - which is an ally you'd definitely appreciate when you're painting.

5. Stick a Tape Over Your Paint Lid

When you brush excess paint over the side of your paint container, it tends to run down your floor and cause a mess. To aid this, place a piece of tape over the top of the can lid, in the center, to allow you to brush off excess paint there rather than over the can's edge. This method eliminates paint drips messing up your floors while conserving paint by allowing it to fall back into the can!
