Painting a home or building yourself can be challenging. From gathering the right materials, to preparing the property, you may want to take these tips to make the most out of your upcoming painting job.

1. Preparation

Before you start, take a close look at the surface you’ll be painting. If it’s in good condition, you may be able to get away with just a fresh coat of paint. But if the surface is cracked, peeling, or otherwise damaged, you’ll need to do some repair work before painting. At this stage, consider how much material you may need and start to come up with a budget. Your budget should not exceed your desired plans but if it does, consider shopping around for alternatives.

2. Choosing the Paint for Your Home

Next, choose the right type of paint for the job. There are different types of paints for different surfaces and purposes. For example, there are exterior paints that can withstand weather and wear better than interior paints. We encourage you to check out Sherwin Williams or consult with a color consultant to choose the right color and paint.

3. Gather Your Materials

Then, gather your materials needed to complete the paint job. This includes not only paint and brushes, but also drop cloths, ladders, safety equipment, and other necessary tools. Make sure you have everything in the event something goes wrong. Should you paint your home or property on your own, we always recommend being more prepared than not, things can often go wrong.

4. Preparing the Property

Now it’s time to prep the property. This may include power washing the surface, repairing any damage, and priming the surface. Proper preparation will make painting much easier and produce better results. When prepping your property, we encourage you to have a dumpster or large trash cans ready for immediate removal of unneeded items. As a professional painting company, NHV Painters always ensures a clean and tidy property during the paint job, you should do the same!

5. Begin Painting

Finally, you’re ready to start painting! Begin by painting the trim first, then move on to the larger surfaces. Work in long strokes and be careful not to paint yourself into a corner.

Keep these tips in mind and you’ll be sure to have a successful painting job! Residential house painting can be challenging, but if you take the proper steps beforehand, it can be a breeze.
