Getting a Painting Estimate When You Can't Be There

Not every painting estimate starts with a walkthrough. Maybe you're closing on a house in a few weeks and don't have keys yet. Maybe your interior designer is out of state and everything needs to happen over video. Or maybe you simply live too far away to be on-site for a first visit. Whatever the reason, "can you quote this without being there in person?" is a question we hear more often than you'd think — and the answer is usually yes, with a little extra groundwork on both sides.

1. When a Remote Estimate Makes Sense

Remote and pre-access estimates come up most often in a few specific situations: buyers who want their new home painted the moment they close, but can't get inside beforehand; homeowners coordinating a project from out of state or overseas; and clients working with a designer who's directing the project from a distance. In each case, the goal is the same — get a real, workable number before anyone sets foot on-site.

The more information you can share upfront, the closer that number will be to your final price. Floor plans with room dimensions, photos of every wall and ceiling, and a clear list of what is and isn't included — walls only, or walls plus trim and ceilings — all help us build an accurate preliminary estimate instead of a rough guess.

2. What We Need From You

For a pre-access or remote quote, we typically ask for square footage by room or level, photos or a floor plan showing layout, and specifics on scope — are we painting walls only, or trim, doors, and ceilings too? If you've already chosen your colors and sheen, share those as well, since finish level can affect both material cost and labor time.

If you're buying a home and haven't closed yet, we can often build two versions of a quote — one for a smaller scope like a single level, and one for a larger scope like the full interior — so you can decide later without waiting on a second estimate. This is especially useful when your access date and your ideal project start date are close together, like a closing followed immediately by a weekend of painting before move-in.

3. Virtual Consultations for Designers and Out-of-State Clients

If you're working with an interior designer, we're glad to hop on a video call with both of you to walk through the scope, discuss finishes, and answer questions in real time. This works well for clients who are managing a renovation remotely or simply prefer to loop in their designer directly rather than relaying details back and forth.

A phone or video consultation typically runs about 15 minutes and covers the same ground as an in-person visit — project scope, timeline, and any special considerations like existing damage or a specific finish you're trying to match.

4. Confirming the Final Number Once You Have Access

A remote estimate gives you a solid working number to plan and budget around, but we always recommend a quick on-site confirmation once you have access to the property — even if it's the same day as closing. This protects both sides: it lets us verify the condition of surfaces in person, and it gives you the chance to finalize colors and details before the crew arrives.

For projects with a tight window between closing and your target start date, let us know as early as possible. The more lead time we have to confirm details and lock in a crew, the better chance we have of hitting a fast turnaround.
