The Truth About Painting and Mold

No one wants mold on their walls and ceilings. Besides being a health hazard, it's unattractive. You might wonder if a simple paint job will do the trick and hide your wall or ceiling mold. Unfortunately, painting is not enough to contain and kill mold. So how do you deal with it?

Can I Paint Over Mold?

Paint might seem like an easy solution to your mold problem, but covering up mold with paint will only make it worse.

  • Existing mold can continue to grow into the wall. Even mold-resistant paints and primerscan't kill mold that is already growing, they can only prevent new mold growth in the future.
  • Mold usually indicates an underlying problem with your home. Since mold grows in moist areas, it can reveal places in your home where you have or had water damage. If you don't fix the source of the water, mold will grow back.
  • Mold can cause health problems. For people sensitive to mold, it can cause eye, nose, throat and lung irritation. It can even trigger asthma attacks in people with asthma. By covering up mold, it can continue to grow and release dangerous mold spores.

The best way to get rid of mold for good is to go through a process called mold remediation. Mold remediation is a series of steps in which mold is carefully contained and removed, any moldy surfaces are treated, and the underlying cause of the mold is found and fixed.

Painting After Mold Remediation

Once you've been through the mold remediation process, all of the mold will be removed from your home. At this point, it is safe to paint your walls or ceiling!

While mold and moisture-resistant paints can't remove existing mold, they are an excellent choice to prevent new mold from growing. If your wall is protected against moisture, mold cannot grow there. By choosing a mold-resistant paint you will help ensure that your home will be mold-free in the future.
