Residential Painting New Haven, CT: Vinyl Paint Pros & Cons

23 June 2020

Are you planning to repaint your interior, floor, ceiling, or exterior? Vinyl paint is one of the most versatile options out there. In this article, we will be sharing some basic facts as well as the pros and cons of using acrylic paint. Vinyl paint is part of water-based paint, just like acrylic paint or alkyd paint. It is composed of water, pigments, acetate, and vinyl. Its binder is a vinyl resin. Vinyl acetate is a synthetic solvent) which gives vinyl paint the characteristic of being fairly elastic and well receptive to colored pigments. It also gives it very good adhesion and interesting covering power. Vinyl paint is often compared to acrylic paint because it is generally used for the same applications as the latter. This paint is therefore a water-based paint that benefits from certain advantages of oil paint such as elasticity, very good adhesion, and high covering power.

Vinyl Paint Professionals

The main advantage of vinyl paint is its very good adhesion. Its elasticity means that it adheres perfectly to any porous and/or absorbent surface.

  • Non-toxic and it gives off very little odor.
  • It is a water paint so it dries by evaporation of the water it contains unlike oil paints (solvent).
  • Vinyl paint dries fairly quickly on the surface. It will take several days for drying to the core.
  • No need to use solvent-based products such as white spirit when cleaning tools.

For the decorative side, vinyl paint is perfect as an effect paint. It is original and allows you to create your own decorative paintings. Vinyl paint is easy to apply.

Vinyl Paint Cons

In its main drawbacks, there is a tendency to turn yellow after a certain time, and it is the light tones that suffer the most. It is for this reason that it is not used as a finishing paint. Because of its fairly oily texture, drying at the core of vinyl paint takes a bit longer. You must wait for the vinyl paint to dry before you start the second coat to minimize the chances of premature peeling. Several layers of paint will be necessary (at least 3) to obtain an optimal result. Finally, everything will depend on the quality of the paint of course. Generally, the covering power of vinyl paint is not comparable to that of oil paint and even that of some acrylic paints. Vinyl paint does not generally apply to metals. It does not adhere to this kind of surface effectively. It is advisable to apply several thin coats of vinyl paint rather than a single thick one. Aesthetically speaking, a layer that is too thick will not necessarily be pleasant to see.

Vinyl Paint Prices

As with all paints, it all depends on whether you have your painting done by a professional or if you want to get your hands dirty. The price of low-end or mid-range classic vinyl paint is very affordable. Vinyl paint is the cheapest paint on the market. Be careful though, if you opt for a high-end vinyl paint, you will find the price a little pricy.
