Residential Painting, New Haven, CT: Here Is A Perfect fix for Chipped Paint

23 February 2020

If your paint job in New Haven, CT just started peeling, you don’t have to repaint the entire house or wall right away. A little fix can be quite inexpensive and nearly as effective as a new paint job. Generally, before painting the interior or exterior of your home, you need to deal with existing paint problems. Chipped paint poses a real dilemma: it is too small to justify stripping the entire wall but too large to be ignored. Indeed, you can still prime and paint over an area where the paint has peeled off. As long as the remaining edges are stable, it will work. But it is an ugly solution, especially if it is a paint that flakes on several layers. The method described here involves filling the spaces left behind by the flaking paint with the wood filler. It also helps protect the edges of the existing paint so that they are less likely to come off again.

Tools and Materials Required

You may already have the tools and equipment to repair your chipped paint. Here are the main items you will need:

• Wood filler or wood putty.

• Putty knife

• Paint scraper.

• Wire brush.

• Sander.

• Primer.

Scrape Loose Paint

With your paint scraper, scrape the loose edges of the painted area. Stop when it becomes too difficult to remove the paint.

Wire Brush and Light Sanding

With your wire brush, vigorously scrub away any remaining debris from the area. Work the edges once more. If the paint starts to peel, turn it over and remove it with the paint scraper.

Fix Peeling Paint – Apply Putty With a Putty Knife

This is the “fun part,” as far as this project goes. Some things to keep in mind include:

  • Apply the wood pulp to your putty knife and spread it in the area.
  • You only need a thin layer.
  • Make sure the wood filler material extends beyond the perimeter of the area you are fixing.
  • Allow the filler wood to dry completely
  • Manufacturer’s instructions may recommend waiting for 45 minutes or an hour. You can give it at least 2 hours. If you try to sand before it is completely dry, it will stick on your sanding paper.

Sand the Wood Filler

Use fine-grain sandpaper. It’s a little tricky because you want to grind this layer of wood filler to the thickness of one, two, three, or even several coats of paint. If you apply too much force, you will sand down to bare wood, in which case you will have to start all over again.

Prime and Paint

Your dried wood filler will need to be primed before painting. After painting, it should be spotless and blend in with the rest of the painted areas.
