Interior Painting New Haven, CT: How to Paint a Ceiling Effortlessly

23 January 2021

To renovate your interior, it is often necessary to undertake painting work. The ceiling is not the most conspicuous decorative element, but a damaged ceiling is visible at a glance. One of the reasons for this renovation project is that a ceiling often gets stained over time. This is why it is essential to renovate and repaint your ceiling as soon as the first signs of wear appear: peeling ceiling paint, color differences, tarnished ceiling paint, etc.

The positive point is that this work is not very complicated and a good handyman can complete this job in just a few hours. However, a properly painted ceiling requires you to have the necessary tools: special ceiling paint, stepladder, roller with the telescopic tube, etc. If you misapply the paint or do not use the right tools, traces of paint will emerge, and the result will not be aesthetic.

In this article, we explain how to prepare your ceiling and the paint application technique to use.

Before deciding to re-paint, you will need to check the current coating of the ceiling. Indeed, some ceilings are covered with wallpaper that cannot be painted or is in poor condition. If the wallpaper is placed on the ceiling, you must either repaint directly on this coating or remove the wallpaper. It is also recommended to apply a light shade to make the room brighter.

Method for Painting a Ceiling

Repainting your ceiling is not such a simple operation. There are several methods to succeed in this project, which depend essentially on the type of paint used: acrylic paints, single or two-coat, gloss, and satin or matt. Depending on your material, you will need to adapt the application technique to obtain an optimal result. Start the work by preparing the room by placing a plastic sheet, masking, and protective tape. Then, prepare the ceiling for painting by cleaning its surface or carrying out some repairs (filling the hole, sanding if cracks, washing the ceiling if dirt). The application of the paint must start with the delicate areas: corners and angles of the ceiling. Then paint the ceiling in two coats by roller with a telescopic handle or by using a stepladder. Finish the work and remove the protections in place. These five steps are not complex, even for the amateur handyman. However, restoring the ceiling requires skill because the position is not comfortable. It is also very common to experience pain during this work because of the arms raised to paint in awkward positions.

Tips to Avoid Damage

To avoid damaging your furniture or causing paint stains on your walls, you strongly recommend that you protect your walls and floors with canvas and adhesives. Some tips for painting a surface correctly:

  • Always apply two coats of paint.
  • Do not pass the roller several times in the same place but be regular in your brush strokes and roller.
  • Do not paint in a room with low or high temperatures (ideal temperature: 18 to 24 degrees.)
