Interior Painting & Décor New Haven, CT: 6 Ways to Light Up a Dark Room

23 September 2020

Everyone loves natural light. However, not all homes are lucky enough to benefit from the sunlight, and as a result, some of their rooms may be darker than others. Fortunately, there are ways to cope with living in a dark house, including implementing a few optical illusions and design tips, which will help rearrange the room for more light. Adding light or brightness to a room is not about undertaking a large-scale renovation project. As mentioned, there are several ways to bring more light to a room without undertaking a project that will last a week. In this article, we share some home interior and décor tips to help you brighten your otherwise dark home interior in New Haven, CT.

1). Add Some Mirrors

As you may probably already know, mirrors allow light to reflect inside a room and create the illusion of a larger, brighter space regardless of its size. This old advice has been tried and tested, and we suggest you use it if you have a window in the room. Hang a large mirror on the wall directly in front of the window in these dark spaces, and this will allow the light to reflect and expand the space. If the idea of fitting a large mirror into space doesn’t appeal to you, try putting a few smaller ones and create an eye-catching design on your wall or any type of reflective surface.

2) Check Your Lighting

On the surface, this may be an obvious suggestion. Still, you might not realize that swapping out some bulbs for others with the right wattage or better intensity will have a huge impact. Not only will changing the bulbs make a huge difference, but removing dust from your fixtures could also increase the brightness, so remember to give these fixtures a good dusting now and then. If you have recessive lighting in one of the darker rooms in your home, consider installing LED versions, as this will brighten up space and decrease the expenses on electricity.

3). Minimalism

Adopting minimalist décor is a clever way to brighten up the space. This is because an excessively crowded space will intensify an already dark and claustrophobic space.

4) Use White Paint To Brighten up the Space

Painting a room white is a tried and tested method of brightening up the space. Still, it’s important to choose the right shade of white for the impact to be significant. Do a little research to determine which hues work better than others, especially in your decor. Massive wooden beams or a dark ceiling can make a room appear smaller or darker. Because of this, painting one or the other white will help make the space visually bigger.

5) Install Open Shelves

Open and clean cabinets will be a great way to visually expand the space. Rather than dark or heavy cabinets that might look too massive or overdone in low light areas, open cabinets will allow more light to enter the interior. Keep things to a minimum, highlighting decorative items or glasses. If you need storage but want to avoid visual clutter, consider incorporating colorful baskets.

6) Keep Window Treatments Light

Natural light is the key to visually enlarging a dark room. However, even if you have large windows, it is important to dress them properly. Avoid using heavy or dark curtains that will block out this natural light, even in the bedroom. Instead, consider more minimalist or understated options like Roman shades or a less opaque light-colored curtain. This will allow you to have privacy while letting light into the room.
