Our fences are an important part of our exterior - they're not only the first line of defense to our homes, but they also add and contribute to our home exterior's overall appeal.

Our fences are essentially one of the first things people will see when they pass by our homes, so it is important that we both: set a good first impression and; do the necessary maintenance for our fences, which is best done through a fresh coat of paint.

So, if you are currently thinking of repainting your fences, here's something that might be of help to you.

Here are Handy Tips For Your Fence Repainting Project.

1. Check Weather Conditions Ahead of Time

When you are doing your fence repainting project, one of the first things that you should be doing would be to check for weather conditions ahead of time.

Since you are essentially painting your fences, which is a part of your exterior and thus, outside of your home, the weather will be a huge factor to your painting project.

Ideally, you'd want to paint in a clear, dry weather, to ensure your project's success.

You'd want to avoid painting on rainy days, for very obvious reasons that do not need further elaboration.

Additionally, it is not advised to paint on a particularly hot day, especially under the direct heat of the sun, since the extreme temperatures might mess up your coat of paint and cause paint problems that will just be a hassle to take care of.

2. Do Proper Surface Preparation

In repainting your fences, it is essential that you do proper surface preparation beforehand.

As has been established previously, our fences are outside of our homes - which makes them extremely vulnerable to tons of factors that might break them down or dirty them over time.

So, prior to adding that fresh coat of paint on them, you will need to ensure that your fences are clean and smooth first, to essentially ensure a clean and smooth paint finish too.

In doing this, you will want to inspect your fences first for any damages, make the necessary repairs for them if there are any, and ensure that your fences are free from any dirt, dust, or mud that might have accumulated on them over time.

3. Clear The Area Near Your Fences

In repainting your fences, you'd also want to clear the area near your fences to ensure a seamless and smooth painting process.

There tends to be a lot of movement and activity involved in a painting project, so removing as much obstruction as you can really help with smoothening your process of painting.

In doing this, you should try to remove as much stuff as you can, such as exterior furniture, decoration, or appliances that you might have near your fences such as sprinklers or solar panels.

4. Choose A Paint Color Properly

You have two options in repainting your fences - you can either repaint using the same color or choose an entirely different color.

If you're choosing the latter, or it's just really your first time painting your fences, there are several considerations that you'll have to make in order to arrive at the best possible choice.

First, natural lighting will be a big factor in your decision - natural lighting tends to wash out colors, making them look shades cooler than they actually are.

So, to counter this, you will want to do a test paint on a small portion of your fences, so you can actually see which paint colors will look good with the lighting present.

Additionally, you should also be looking at the colors already present on your home exterior, so you can choose a paint color for your fences that will go well with them accordingly - allowing for a more cohesive finish.

5. Use Primer

Lastly, it is important that add a coat of primer on your fences first before adding your coat of paint.

In any painting project, primer will always be a non-negotiable aspect of it, and for good reasons.

Primer will ensure that your coat of paint will have better coverage, thus, allowing for a brighter and more vivid paint finish.

Primer will also act as an extra layer of protection for your coat of paint and your surface - so if you want your painting project to last longer, remember to add a can of primer or two to your shopping cart.
