How To Remove Stains From Your Freshly Painted Wall In New Haven, CT
Glenn Williamson • April 23, 2020

Your home interior in New Haven, CT, has just been repainted. Everything breathes new. Your work fills you with pride. Suddenly, you spot a fresh new pair of mud boot prints. Fingerprints full of chocolate, splashes, or worse… the marker, follow soon. Relax, don’t panic: there is a way to clean all stains without damaging your paint or its sheen.

Have These Three Golden Rules in Mind

The higher the quality of the paint, the more it resists the mechanical action of cleaning. With this in mind, a solid and durable paint is often worth the price you spend on it. So choose a washable paint in the rooms where you need it most, such as the kitchen or bathroom. Immediately clean the stains. This will prevent dirt from getting into the paint layer. Never scrub the stains dry – use a liquid. By doing so, the wear will be less on the surface of the paint, and the dirt will come off more easily.

Some Specific Maintenance Tips

  • Type of Stain. It is mainly the nature of the stain that determines how to remove it.
  • Location of Stain. Wood paints generally resist scrubbing well. Is your stain on the wall or the ceiling?
  • Glossy or Matt Sheen. Is it painted furniture? This is called lacquer paint – paint for wood. These usually have a scratch-resistant paint sheet. The gloss paints are smoother and are more resistant to dirt. Using a damp cloth or sponge, you can remove all the dirt without damaging it. If you chose a matte paint, do not scrub too hard and not too long in one place, as this could result in variations in gloss.
  • The Nature of the Stain. When it comes to wet spots, such as coffee or jam, do not wait. Do not allow the paint film to absorb the stain. This is because if it penetrates and dries, there are risks that you can never get rid of it again. Clean the wall carefully with a damp sponge until all the dirt is gone. Stubborn stains such as pencil or marker should not be cleaned with a sponge, and getting rid of them without traces is difficult. Take your time to remove the stain. Use more powerful cleaning products. However, be careful: the more powerful the solvent, the more you risk dissolving the stain. If the sponge gets dirty, rinse it from time to time to avoid spreading the stain.

Glossy Paint vs. Matte Wall Paint

Walls painted with gloss or satin paint can still be cleaned relatively easily. Although the paint sheet, in this case, is much more porous than that of a lacquer. That means: scouring is out of the question. Use a damp cloth or sponge soaked in water and scrub gently. For stubborn stains, preferably use an appropriate cleaning product.

The matte wall paint, on the other hand, has a super smooth appearance and a very thin and porous layer. This gives it two drawbacks:

  • The dirt quickly gets into the paint layer (so be sure to clean it up immediately)
  • Scrubbing quickly removes the matte surface layer from the paint film, and this will damage your paint job. So scrub with caution, use the soft side of a damp sponge or cloth.
